Your brain’s heightened sensitivity can make you perceptive and creative. But it’s a double-edged sword, researchers find.
It turns out that a high IQ is also associated with various mental and immunological diseases like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD as well as allergies, asthma, and immune disorders.
A survey showed that highly intelligent people are 20% more likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 80% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, 83% more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety, and 182% more likely to develop at least one mood disorder.
When it comes to physiological diseases, people with high cognitive abilities are 213% more likely to have environmental allergies, 108% more likely to have asthma, and 84% more likely to have an autoimmune disease.
The researchers turned to the field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) to look for some of the answers. PNI examines how the chronic stress accumulated as a response to environmental factors influences the communication between the brain and the immune system.
The researchers point out that highly intelligent people have tendencies for “intellectual overexcitabilites” and a hyper-reactivity of the central nervous system.
On the one hand, this gives people with high IQ heightened awareness that helps their creative and artistic work.
In fact, the field of cognitive ability recognizes one aspect of highly intelligent people to be “a broader and deeper capacity to comprehend their surroundings.”
This hyper-reactivity, however, can also lead to deeper depressions and poor mental health. This turns out to be particularly true for poets, novelists and people with high verbal intelligence. Their intense emotional response to the environment increases tendencies for rumination and worry, both of which predict depression and anxiety disorders.
Heightened psychological responses can affect immunity, write the researchers. People with overexcitabilites may have strong reactions to seemingly harmless external stimuli like an annoying clothing tag or a sound. This reaction may turn into low level chronic stress and launch an inappropriate immune response.
When the body believes it is in danger (regardless of whether it is an objectively real one like a toxin or an imagined one like an annoying sound), it launches a cascade of physiological responses that include a myriad of hormones, neurotransmitters and signaling molecules. When these processes are chronically activated, they can alter the body and the brain, dysregulate immune function and lead to conditions like asthma, allergies and autoimmune diseases.
The scientific literature has confirmed the association between gifted children and an increased rate of allergies and asthma. One study shows that 44% of those with an IQ over 160 suffered from allergies compared to 20% of age-matched peers. Тhe exploratory study done by the authors of this latest paper further supports that connection.
Based on their findings and previous studies the researchers have termed this phenomenon the hyper brain / hyper body theory of integration, explaining that:根据他们的发现和之前的研究,研究人员将这种现象称为超大脑/超身体整合理论,并解释说:
The overexcitabilities specific to those with high intelligence may put these individuals at risk for hypersensitivity to internal and/or external environmental events.
The rumination and worry that accompanies this heightened awareness may contribute to a chronic pattern of fight, flight, or freeze responses which then launch a cascade of immunological events. […] […]
Ideally, immune regulation is an optimal balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory response. It should zero in on inflammation with force and then immediately return to a calm state. In those with the overexcitabilities previously discussed, including in those with ASD, this system appears to fail to achieve a balance and thus inflammatory signals create a state of chronic activation.
which caused 57,000 people to evacuate their homes.
Thirty-seven to 300 people, depending on the report, died due to drowning or building collapse.
Commentators blamed China’s infrastructure, saying it was either antiquated or built in a hurry in the race to modernization, for the damage and deaths.
Suddenly, safety was on everybody’s minds.
CET Academic Programs—a company that sends roughly 650 study abroad students to China every year—thinks a lot about safety in China. CET
Many of the threats to American students in China are the same threats foreign residents and visitors face.
In an effort to provide safety tips for tourists and business people in China, CET surveyed staff members who have lived in China for two or more years, some since the 1980s.
Everyone agreed that living in China felt relatively safe.
Most interviewees felt that China was safer than the United States in terms of violent crime,
but that living in China posed other risks, particularly in terms of food safety, traffic safety, and petty theft.
While most colleagues reported feeling some threats—mostly minor—to health and well-being,
one respondent indicated she had never had a safety issue in one and a half years living in Beijing.

I have been homeschooling my daughter 自从她的学校在三月中旬关上校门开始 since her school closed mid-March, 我决定了 and I have decided 我以后要继续自己来教她 that I will continue teaching her myself, 即使是学校最终复课 even when schools eventually open again.
She thrives in our current set up, 我知道继续目前这种方式,对她来说是最好的 and I know that continuing it is the best choice for her.
下面就是这八个原因 Here are eight reasons 为什么我决定在疫情最终结束后,我还会继续在家教育 why I have decided to continue homeschooling after the pandemic is finally over:
I Can Offer Individual Attention That a Classroom Teacher Never Could
Teaching my child at home 意味着她有一对一的支持 means that she has one-to-one support 在整个一天的学习日当中 the whole school day long.
When I taught elementary school, I often had classes of over 30 little learners, 他们都需要我的关注 all in need of my attention.
When I had smaller classes, 学生人数大概只有一半 about half that size, 就出现了很明显的改变 there was a notable difference 在我的孩子们能够取得的进步方面 in how much progress my kids were able to make 以及我与每个孩子之间这种关系的质量方面 and in the quality of the relationships I developed with each child.
The students in my larger classes spent more time waiting for my help
要么就是在做完什么之后眼睛看着天发呆 or staring into space when they were done, 我也必须管理得严厉一些 and my discipline needed to be harsher.
I know that difference was because there were fewer students for me to teach and connect with.
Now imagine how much more I can give to just one child.
Even if I had more children at different grade levels, I would still be able to help each child so much more with a manageable number of them.
I Can Follow Her Interests
When I homeschool my daughter, 她可以学到更多自己真正感兴趣的东西 she can learn more about what she really cares about.
比如说 For example, 她对火山爆发很感兴趣 she is fascinated with volcanoes, 还有热带雨林 the tropical rainforest, 以及古埃及and ancient Egypt.
I don’t have to wait until the standards dictate that it’s time for her to learn about these topics.
Instead I have the ability to seize the moment and 钻进那些最激起她兴趣的科目里去 dive deep into topics that spark her passion.
While my daughter might be interested in these subjects, 它们并不见得是我擅长的 they are certainly not what my expertise is in, 这也是为什么我订阅了 study.com 这个网站which is why I subscribe to Study.com
I use Study.com to not only find engaging and creative lessons on the subjects my daughter loves, 同时也用来给我的在家教育计划提供整体指导 but also to guide the overall curriculum of my homeschooling plan.
Study.com 给三年级到十二年级的所有学生提供全套教程 offers full academic curriculums for grades 3–12 and beyond, 总共有七万九千个课程,可以让你的孩子根据自己的学习方式来选择,有视频、课本、闪卡with over 79,000 lessons tailored to your child’s learning style with videos, transcripts, and flashcards.
Many parents feel nervous about homeschooling 因为他们感觉自己不够聪明 because they feel like they are not smart enough, 不知道该如何起步 and struggle with how to get started.
那么 Study.com 这个网站就可以把这个疑虑和担心拿走,helps take the guesswork and worry out of homeschooling.
They offer lessons in every subject you could think of 包括数学including math, 科学science, 历史 history, 阅读reading, 以及其他and more, 这个让它很容易创造一种全方位的教育体验making it easy to create a well-rounded educational experience.
You can also access on-demand help from expert instructors 如果你需要针对某个话题马上获得答案或者支持的话 if you need a quick question answered or support in any subject.
另外 Plus, 如果你和我一样 if you’re like me 你的孩子有很特别的兴趣 and your child has very specific interests, 他们甚至可以创造自己的课程 they even have an option to create your own courses 只要把特定的视频和按照自己个性化的学习体验选择的教程 收集起来就好了 by putting together specific videos and lessons for a personalized learning experience.
I Can Meet Her Where She’s At
最好的在家教育教程是可以兼顾孩子的教育需求,和她的兴趣的 best homeschool curriculum is one that fits both your child’s educational needs and interests. As her teacher at home, I am able to nurture her interests and abilities by continuing to work on advancing her reading skills.
When it comes to her weaknesses, I can put off things that she is simply not developmentally ready for, 或者 or, 相反地 conversely, 针对她的问题区域 target her problem areas 磨炼那些技能 and hone in on those skills.
I Get to Spend More Time With My Child
More Time Outdoors
No More Hectic Mornings
More Opportunities for Real-World Learning
Homeschool is integrated into home life, 这样我就有很多机会教我的女儿一些居家生活技能,and I have so many opportunities to teach my daughter how to complete domestic tasks 比如说做饭 like cooking 维修家里的东西 and fixing things around the house, 并且协助我做一些院子里的工程 and helping out with yard projects 比如说园艺 such as gardening 或者建一个游戏小屋 or building a playhouse.
I Am the Only Teacher Who Loves My Student More than Anything
Appleby Horse Fair, June 2009. Gypsies and travellers descend on a small Cumbria village for five days of socialising and horse trading. The event is the largest of its kind in the UK and has been taking place for more than 300 years. It is a big tourist draw.
